Frodo, Sam and Bilbo

Introducing our lesser-known family members... This is a sweet lil Water Dragon I picked out for Chad's birthday back in October. Little did I know it would kick off our "Reptile Room" and lead to not only a Bearded Dragon but a baby snake (6 weeks old right now) as well as little unmentionable critters Chad is raising to feed to our reptiles!
"Hi!"
When it is finished our reptile room will be pretty cool!
Ryland always says good-night to his little buddies.

Yep ~ I knew it. I was fooled by the remote-control tarantula, but I knew you had a "WILD" side to you...

I loved the nutes (sp?) in my high school biology class, but never had interest in having reptiles in my home ~ especially not a snake!

However, I think it's awesome for Chad and the 'young 'uns'... I think I'll just enjoy them from blog distance. ;)

Yep, you were right Joanie! I even considered a live turantula. But I will not even peek at the things Chad is colonizing. Is that the righ term Chad? And which name belongs to which reptile?

Well, if you know much about me and my childhood, you'd know that the only thing aside from fishing i've every really be 'in to' is animals. Any kind will do. But I really enjoy reptiles. As a kids in WA and Texas I'd often make my own mini zoos. At one time I had possums, armadillos, giant bullfrogs, snapping turtles, etc in Texas. In WA, it was more lizards, garter snakes, salamanders, newts, frogs, etc. I had a few pet reptiles my mom bought for me. Even had a pet dwarf caiman (think tiny croc) that was really COOL, but gave it away when I moved away to college.
In fact, i used to really want to be a zoologist, biologist, or vet before being talked out of it and into engineering...

Anyway, i've put fly fishing on hold for a while, and look what happened? I'm back to creating my zoo... As if my house isn't like a zoo enough as it is :)

Oh, and Frodo is the brownish bearded dragon. Sam is the snake. Bilbo is the green water dragon. Although 'Bilbo' has many names and none seem to stick. He\
she (don't know yet) has been called lizzy, gandalf, and pippen. Trying to have a LOTR theme, so had to change Ryland's choice of "lizzy". But we'll see...

I consider this part of homeschooling (science, biology, etc). Saves gas on a drive to the zoo ;)

And yes, the Dubia colony is pretty cool. Teighly wanted to hold them all the time. She liked them as much or more than the lizards. But they are a self sustaining food supply (saves major $$ in the long run so you don't have to keep heading to the pet store for critter food).

Oh my!
Ethan was trying to talk me into a trantula a few days ago. I didn't say yes and I didn't say no. But I don't want one in the house!

Maybe we'll also have to settle on a remote control HUGE hairy spider instead!

Chad ~ I think this passion of yours is fabulous! And what you've shared is exactly why I'm not willing to talk any of our children into a career choice that isn't in line with their God-given passions. I've seen too many people get a degree in a 'good, professional, family-supporting field' and then years later quit their jobs and return to their "first love", usually around mid-life. My husband is really struggling with that right now...

Love all the critters, but I like the 'cute and cuddly' types personally! Great home education project and you'll have to keep teaching the rest of us too! I love it!

I'm cool with Frodo and Bilbo/Gandolf/Lizzy but Sam freaks me out! I don't trust anything without legs. Actually, I'm a little phobic (or a lot) of snakes. YIKES!

Becca, I don't know how you do it! Lizards, snakes and roaches for food....WOW.
